Trevor D. Hrynyk, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of structural engineering in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has been on Faculty since 2014. Dr. Hrynyk received his doctorate from the University of Toronto (2013), after earning his M.S. degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla (2007) and his B.A.Sc. degree from the University of Waterloo (2005). He was previously employed as a Wind Engineering Co-op Student for a period of 16 months (2003-2005) with Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin, Inc. where he undertook projects related to building cladding and wind-induced structural responses studies. He is a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), and the Federation Internationale du Beton (fib) | International Federation for Structural Concrete.
His research interests relate to studying the mechanical behaviour of structural concrete and developing computational modelling procedures that can be used for the design and assessment of reinforced concrete structures, particularly for those influenced by shear response mechanisms. In that light, and while serving in his capacity as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas, Dr. Hrynyk has been awarded research grants and led research projects aimed at examining the shear-resisting performance of slab systems and connections, on developing damage-based analysis procedures for the assessment of shear-cracked reinforced concrete bridge infrastructure, and on validating (experimentally and numerically) the shear resisting performance of existing shear-damaged reinforced concrete bridge members. Further, he has served as co-principal investigator on several other projects with similar objectives related to the design, modelling, and experimental investigation of concrete bridge infrastructure.
He is a current member of ACI Committees 447 (Finite Element Analysis of Reinforced Concrete), 421 (Design of Reinforced Concrete Slabs), and 445C (Shear and Torsion – Punching Shear). He also serves on fib Working Party 2.2.1 – Beam Shear, and is the current Convener of fib Task Group 2.4 – Computer-Based Modelling and Design. He has taught courses on reinforced concrete member design, reinforced concrete structural system design, reinforced concrete behaviour and analysis, and on advanced mechanics and plasticity modelling of reinforced concrete.
Dr. Hrynyk has authored technical papers that have been published in many of the leading structural engineering journal in North America and the world: ACI Structural Journal, ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, fib Structural Concrete, and others. Further, along with co-author F.J. Vecchio, he also recently received the 2018 Raymond C. Reese Research Prize, awarded by the American Society of Civil Engineering in recognition of one of his journal papers published in 2016 in the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, related to the modelling of steel-concrete composite elements under in-plane and out-of-plane shear loading conditions.
